It began a few years ago as the email, From the Cine, that I started for my friends for fun, so they can check out what to see or read on the fly. Then one month, I hadn’t planned on writing it and a friend demanded it. So here is B Scene Magazine – a forum to report anything and everything of interest for your over-active mind and worn-out wallet.

NINE
Official website: "Nine is a vibrant and provocative musical that follows the life of world famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his film star muse (Nicole Kidman), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench), an American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Stacy Ferguson) and his mother (Sophia Loren)."
This was fun to watch and experience on the big screen. Though matinee-worthy, stepping into the fantasy world of the Maestro was a complete throwback to '60s period films. I still plan on watching "8 1/2", on which this musical feature is based.
Funniest line: "I'll be waiting for you here . . . with my legs open!" (Penelope Cruz)

The Cove on DVD
A phenomenal and daring documentary. In Taiji, Japan, 23,000 dolphins are slaughtered every year. Rick Barry, Simon Hutchins and associates go in guerrila-warfare style to collect live evidence for the first time and expose Japan's dirty, little secret.
Activist Rick Barry is a rock star! You feel the weight of his guilt, having introduced the world to "Flipper", but also the strength of his conviction to save dolphins.
I may never go to Sea World or a dolphin park ever again. Did you know they feed them Maalox and antacids to them because they have ulcers from all the stress of captivity?
Warning: It will be gut-wrenching to watch them trapped and attacked and to see the cove become a blanket of red.
"The Taiji dolphin slaughter is scheduled to resume every September. Unless we stop it."
Maybe Douglas Adams had it right and we'll not know of our short-sightedness until we hear their parting words as they flee our puny planet.

Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort's defenses and to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague Horace Slughorn, who he believes holds crucial information. Even as the decisive showdown looms, romance blossoms for Harry, Ron, Hermione and their classmates. Love is in the air, but danger lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again."
The adventure continues!

In the Loop on DVD
Jacket: "Peter Capaldi stars as the foul-mouthed British government spokesman who must act quickly when a mid-level minister (Tom Hollander) tells an interviewer that U.S. war in the Middle East is "unforeseeable." But when they are both summoned to Washington D.C.. the hapless politico quickly becomes a pawn of the bureaucrats, spin doctors and military advisors, including a hard-nosed General (James Gandolfini)."
This was hilarious! Capaldi is a riot and makes swearing an art form! I needed a funny film after just seeing a snoozer and this hit the mark.

G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra on DVD
I blame being trapped on a plane for 9 hours and having seen all the other films showing for subjugating my eyes to this. Why did it have to be soooooo cheesy?!

the ugly truth on DVD
Jacket: "Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler star in this wildly funny battle of the sexes from director Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde). Abby (Heigl), a successful morning show producer, is looking for a lot in a man. Mike (Butler), her obnoxious TV star, knows men only want one thing. Determined to prove that she's not romantically challenged, Abby takes Mike's advice during a promising new romance, but the unexpected results will stun everyone."
I don't know about "wildly funny", but I did crack up several times watching this. And I had to watch it a second time. Check it out.

The Accidental Husband on DVD
Jacket: "Firefighter Patrick Sullivan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) finds his life turned upside-down when his fiancee suddenly calls off their pending nuptials per the recommendation of radio love guru Dr. Emma lloyd (Uma Thurman). Determined to get back at this "love doctor," Sullivan forges a fake marriage license, "accidentally" marrying him to Emma, who's already engaged to Richard (Colin Firth).
But as Patrick's charms begin to wear Emma down, she must decide which of these bachelors is her "Mr. Right." Also starring Sam Shepard, Justina Machado and Isabella Rossellini ..."
I really had high hopes for this film, but I just didn't find it that funny.

Disneynature earth on DVD
Jacket: "An epic story of adventure, starring some of the most magnificent and courageous creatures alive, awaits you in earth. Disneynature brings you a remarkable story of three animal families on a journey across our planet - polar bears, elephants and humpback whales. Filmed with spectacular clarity and beauty, earth is both majestic and intimate as it captures rare footage of nature's wildest and most elusive animals. From the landmark Disneynature collection, earth is an astonishing and heartwarming film filled with adventure, suspense and humor that will take your breath away."
I agree with this description. This is such a beautiful film to watch AND experience. And of course, it is wonderfully narrated by James Earl Jones.
I think my favorite scenes involved birds. They were a crack up!
Don't worry, it's rated G for the kids so you won't be seeing what happens when animals really attack.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen on DVD
Jacket: "When college-bound Sam Witwicky (Shia LeBeouf) learns the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers, he must accept his destiny abd join Optimus Prime and Bumblebee in their epic battle against the Decepticons, who have returned stronger than ever with a plan to destroy our world."
My 13-year-old cousins will like this one, especially with the annoyingly forced relationship angle they strove for. Eh, I found the new sarcastic bots pretty funny.
The Wind that Shakes the Barley (2006)
Wikipedia: "The Wind That Shakes the Barley is a 2006 Ken Loach film set during the Irish War of Independence (1919–21) and the Irish Civil War (1922–3). Written by long-time Loach collaborator Paul Laverty, this drama tells the story of two County Cork brothers, played by Cillian Murphy and Pádraic Delaney, who join the Irish Republican Army to fight for Irish independence from Great Britain.
Widely praised, the film won the Palme d'Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. Loach's biggest box office success to date,[1] the film did well around the world and set a record in Ireland as the highest-grossing Irish-made independent film ever.[2]"

Battlestar Galactica: The Plan on DVD
Jacket: "The Cylons began as humanity's robot servants. They rebelled and evolved and now they look like us. Their plan is simple: destroy the race that enslaved them. But when their devastating attack leaves human survivors, the Cylons have to improvise. Battlestar Galactica: The Plan tells the story of two powerful Cylon leaders, working separately and their determination to finish the task."
We get most of the answers we were looking for here. Frackin cool.
If you are new to the series. Get on it! You've got four years to catch up. It'll be interesting to watch this series again the AFTER watching this film.

Law Abiding Citizen
This movie was soooo kick-ass. Gerard Butler plays a Law Abiding Citizen whose his family gets murdered. When the attackers brook a deal, he takes matters into his own hands.
Although I enjoyed the action-filled build-up, the ending just kind of fizzled.
This is definitely worth seeing in the theater.

The Proposal on DVD
Jacket: "On the verge of being deported and losing the high-powered job she lives for, the controlling Margaret (Bullock) announces she's engaged to her unsuspecting, put-upon assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds). After proposing a few demands of his own, the mismatched couple heads to Alaska, where they have four short days to convince his quirky family and a very skeptical immigration agent that their charade is real."
Although overly predictable, I didn't hate this film ... in large part due to the talented supporting cast. Betty White is a scene stealer. She's still got it! This film is rentable for a very lazy Sunday afternoon at home on the couch.

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly
Jacket: "NYT best-selling author John Connolly ... examines the grin side of fairy tales in a spellbinding novel about a 12-year-old boy lost in an extraordinary world.
Mourning the loss of of his mother, David finds comfort in the books she left behind. But soon the make-believe world of the books melds with David's reality, and the figments of his imagination become startlingly real. Suddenly, he finds himself in a brutal land populated by trolls, harpies and werewolf-like creatures. His only hope is to find the king, whose Book of Lost Things could show David the way home.
... The Book of Lost Things is a riveting fantasy and a dark reminder that we all must brave the journey from youth to adulthood."
So I'm listening to this story while at work and I'm getting a little creeped out! I can't remember the last time a story did that to me. This is not your kid's Grimm fairy tale! READ THIS BOOK!

Yes Man on DVD
Jacket: "Carl Allen has stumbled across a way to shake free of post-divorce blues and a dead-end job: embrace life and say yes to everything. Take a bungee plunge? Yes. Accept call-now TV offers. Yes ... Jim Carrey place Carl in a YEScapade about opening up to life's possibilities - especially when those possiblities include romance with an intriguing, free-spirited musician (Zooey Deschanel)."
This was mildly funny.

She gets her stilettos in the door when she gets a job writing a personal finance column at a sister publication. Much to her surprise, her column not only becomes a hit, but she falls head over heels for her overworked yet handsome boss (Hugh Dancy). But Becky has a secret that leads to some hilarious high jinks that could unravel it all."
This was cute, but I never read the books.

Book of Fate by Brian Meltzer
Eight years later, Boyle is spotted, alive and well, in Malaysia. In that moment, Wes has the chance to undo the worst day of his life. Trying to figure out what really happened takes Wes back to a decade-old presidential crossword puzzle, mysterious facts buried in Masonic history, and a two-hundred-year-old code invented by Thomas Jefferson.
The Book of Fate. What does it say about you?"
This book was okay. I was expecting more of the Freemason story, but this is a story that just happens to have a Freemason reference.

Dog on It: A Chet & Bernie Mystery by Spencer Quinn
I didn't think I could get into a book narrated by a police-academy-dropout dog, but the character is very endearing and then don't you know it, you want to find out how it ends.
PUBLISHER: "Meet Chet, the wise and lovable canine narrator of Dog on It, who works alongside Bernie, a down-on-his-luck private investigator. Chet might have flunked out of police school ("I'd been the best leaper in K-9 class, which had led to all the trouble in a way I couldn't remember exactly, although blood was involved"), but he's a detective through and through.
Their search for clues takes them into the desert to biker bars and other exotic locals, with Chet's highly trained nose leading the way. Both Chet and Bernie bring their own special skills to the hunt, one that puts each of them in peril. But even as the bad guys try to turn the tables, this duo is nothing if not resourceful, and the result is an uncommonly satisfying adventure.
With his doggy ways and his endearingly hardboiled voice, Chet is full of heart and occasionally prone to mischief. He is intensely loyal to Bernie, who, though distracted by issues that Chet has difficulty understanding -- like divorce, child custody, and other peculiar human concerns -- is enormously likable himself, in his flawed, all-too-human way."

Next Day Air on DVD
Return to Sender! .... Don't bother with this one. All the funniest bits are in the trailer.
Jacket: "A haze-brained courier (Faison) sparks off a chain of uproarious events after he mistakenly delivers a package containing some high grade product to the wrong address and into the hands of two bumbling, wannabe gangsters (Epps and Harris). But these two fools have no clue that their neighbors down the hall - the real REAL gangster and his feisty girlfriend - are connected to the Mexican mob and will do whatever it takes to recover their package."

The quote that says it all: "Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times observed, "What makes "The Lucky Ones" so gratifying to me is anything but gravitas; these three characters are simply likable, warm, sincere and often funny. Sunshine Cleaning on DVD
Wikipedia: "Former high school cheerleading captain Rose Lorkowski (Adams) is a thirty-something single mother who cleans houses for a living. Wanting to send her trouble-making eight-year-old son Oscar (Jason Spevack) to a private school, Rose decides to take her married lover's advice and get into the "lucrative" business of crime scene cleanup. Rose convinces her disillusioned, underachieving sister Norah (Blunt) to join her in the enterprise, which she calls "Sunshine Cleaning." The sisters begin to find meaning in their function to "help" in some way in the aftermath of a loss, just as the job stirs up memories of their own mother's death. Their priorities and goals tested, Rose and Norah face hard challenges as they strive to improve their lives."
A poignant film that reminds you about the harsh realities of relationships ... especially those with our family! Rent it!

Adventureland on DVD
Jacket: "From the director of Superbad comes Adventureland, a smart, witty comedy we can all relate to. When James Brennan has to cancel his dream summer vacation and make some money for grad school, the only job he can get is at Adventureland, a tacky amusement park where the games are rigged and the rides make you hurl. But it's where he meets Em (Kristen Stewart), and his rollercoaster ride to nowhere turns into the best summer ever."
This had a great '80s soundtrack, which may have been better than the story itself.

Gomorrah (2008)
Jacket: "... Based on the best-selling expose that shocked the world, this award-winning drama from director Matteo Garrone weaves together five stories of the violence, vengeance, startling human cost and multi-bilion dollar business of organized crime in Naples, Italy. No one is safe. No one is spared. And for the underworld mob known as "the Camorra", there are no borders that cannot be crossed. "No matter how many Mafia movies you've seen, " says Entertainment Weekly, "no matter how wise you think you are about wiseguy culture, you've never seen anything like GOMORRAH."

Che on DVD
Wikipedia: "Che is a two-part 2008 biopic about Marxist revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Benicio del Toro. Rather than a chronological recitation, the films offer an elliptical series of interspersed moments along the overall timeline. Part One is entitled The Argentine and focuses on the Cuban revolution from the landing of Fidel Castro, Guevara and other revolutionaries on the Caribbean island to their successful toppling of the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista two years later. Part Two, entitled Guerrilla, focuses on Guevara's futile attempt to bring revolution to Bolivia and his ill-fated demise. Both parts are shot in a cinéma vérité style, but each has different approaches to narrative linearity, camerawork, and aspect ratios; this duality is intended to be reflective of the two military campaigns' divergent outcomes."

The Hurt Locker
Landmark Theatres: "The Hurt Locker is a riveting, suspenseful portrait of the courage under fire of the military’s unrecognized heroes: the technicians of a bomb squad who volunteer to challenge the odds and save lives doing one of the world’s most dangerous jobs. Three members of the Army’s elite Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad battle insurgents and one another as they search for and disarm a wave of roadside bombs on the streets of Baghdad—in order to try and make the city a safer place for Iraqis and Americans alike. Their mission is clear—protect and save—but it’s anything but easy, as the margin of error when defusing a war-zone bomb is zero. This thrilling and heart-pounding look at the psychology of bomb technicians and the effects of risk and danger on the human psyche is a fictional tale inspired by real events by journalist and screenwriter Mark Boal, who was embedded with a special bomb unit in Iraq. In Iraq, it is soldier vernacular to speak of explosions as sending you to “the hurt locker.” Acclaimed director Kathryn Bigelow brings together groundbreaking realistic action and intimate human drama in a landmark film starring Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie and Brian Geraghty, with cameo appearances by Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, Evangeline Lilly and Guy Pearce." Official Web Site
A letter from The Hurt Locker director, Kathryn Bigelow
Greetings Film Club members –
Often times, after a movie opens, folks will come up to me and ask a question or two, wanting to know how I managed this or that shot, or why I chose this or that approach to the film as a whole. But usually, they get around to what’s really on their minds, and they say something like, “What’s the most challenging part of the job of being a director?” They want to know about the tough stuff, the hard stuff.
We’re all like that, I guess.
We’re all interested in challenge.
The truth is, once you’ve decided on the material—and that’s the first tough call—all the rest of directing, from the camera work, to creating a visual grammar for the film, to post-production, fall into place on their own, at least for me.
But there’s a big if.
If…you survive the one fork in the road that you absolutely cannot back track on.
And that’s casting. Pick the wrong actor and it doesn’t matter how dazzling your camera work is, or how great the movie sounds, you’ll still end up toast.
For The Hurt Locker, I was lucky enough to work with a brilliant screenwriter, Mark Boal, whose direct, vivid writing about the inner life of men in the bomb squad had the ring of truth and honesty that can only come from first-hand observation. Mark is also a journalist, and he’d been in Baghdad with the Army, and seen with his own eyes the intense bravery and fear these men live with on a daily basis. In William James, he’d created an extremely complex fictional character rife with vivid paradoxes—both a thrill-seeking cowboy and a calm professional, at once a hero and a man adrift in his own isolation.
My problem? Finding an actor with shoes big enough to fill such a nuanced role. I needed a young Sean Penn or a young Russel Crowe. I needed, in other words, a miracle.
I looked and looked for quite some time and then happened to see a small independent movie called Dahmer, in which this terrific actor named Jeremy Renner gave an incredibly nuanced performance, eliciting compassion and revulsion in almost equal measure. It was an arresting display of major talent, and from that moment forward I was determined to work with him. I cast Jeremy as James.
Some folks involved in the financing of the movie were a bit concerned by the choice because Jeremy wasn’t (yet) a household name. They felt they’d have to work extra long hours to bring this bright new star to the public’s attention. But to be perfectly honest, I wasn’t all that worried. Though I still had to go and actually film the movie—and spend six months in the Jordan heat and sand—the hardest part of my job was done.

The International on DVD
Jacket: "Interpol agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) is determined to expose an arms dealing ring responsible for facilitating acts of terrorism around the globe. But as his investigation leads Salinger and his partner, Manhattan District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts), deeper into the secret world of greed, corruption and murder, they become targets of a deadly conspiracy so vast, they soon find the only people left to trust ... are each other."
Tried as I hard as I might, I couldn't get into this. The dialogue is sometimes fantastic, but the story is choppy and the country hopping a little distracting.

Defiance on DVD
Jacket: "Daniel Craig stars as Tuvia Bielski, an ordinary citizen turned hero, in this action-packed epic of family, honor, vengeance and salvation. Defiance is a riveting adventure that showcases the extraordinary true story of the Bielski brothers, simple farmers - outnumbered and outgunned - who turned a group of war refugees into powerful freedom fighters. Tuvia, along with his unyieldig brother, Zus, (Liev Schreiber), motivate hundreds of civilians to join their ranks against the Nazi regime."
I was interesting in learning about this untold story further after watching this.

Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man by Steve Harvey
Jacket: "Steve Harvey, the host of the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, can't count the number of impressive women he's met over the years, whether it's through the "Strawberry Letters" segment of his program or while on tour for his comedy shows. These are women who can run a small business, keep a household with three kids in tiptop shape, and chair a church group all at the same time. Yet when it comes to relationships, they can't figure out what makes men tick. Why? According to Steve it's because they're asking other women for advice when no one but another man can tell them how to find and keep a man. In Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Steve lets women inside the mindset of a man and sheds lights on concepts and questions such as:
—The Ninety Day Rule: Ford requires it of its employees. Should you require it of your man?
—How to spot a mama's boy and what if anything you can do about it.
—When to introduce the kids. And what to read into the first interaction between your date and your kids.
—The five questions every woman should ask a man to determine how serious he is.
— And more...
Sometimes funny, sometimes direct, but always truthful, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is a book you must read if you want to understand how men think when it comes to relationships."
This is funny AND insightful. Every woman should read this at least once. And for the sportsfish, read again and again.
The Sky Crawlers (2008) on DVD
Anime News Network: "Kannami Yuichi is a "Kildren", a fighter pilot recently sent to Urisu Base to replace a previous one who had died in battle. Like the numerous genetically-engineered pilots before him, he does not age, only to live his life fighting and eventually dying in battle. Rostock and Lautern, 2 different companies have been engaged in a brutal war that has no beginning or end, rather the battles they create serve to "entertain" the peacetime people. Yuichi befriends the base commander, Kusanagi Suito, a woman who endures a long dark past. As their relationship grows, Yuichi learns the bittersweet moments of life, and the inescapable fate he has been placed in.error
This was visually stunning to watch, but I got a little lost in the storyline.

Taken on DVD
Jacket: "Liam Neeson is an unstoppable force (Premiere) in this action-packed international thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. When his estranged teenage daughter is kidnapped in Paris, a former spy (Neeson) sets out to find her at any cost. Relying on his special skills, he tracks down the ruthless gang that abducted her and launches a one-man war to bring them to justice and rescue his daughter."
Although part predictable, part unrealistic, it was still thrilling to watch. Neeson still kicks ass!
Star Trek (2009)

Eden Log
Jacket: "A man wakes up deep inside a cave. Suffering amnesia, he has no recollection of how he came to be there, or of what happened to the man whose body he finds beside him. Tailed by a mysterious creature, this forgotten man embarks upon a journey through this strange and fantastic world, desperately struggling to find his way to the surface."
A must-see for the sci-fi buffs, just for curiosity's sake. This is a French take (read into that what you will) on the sci-fi, apocalyptic genre. The storyline is choppy, CGI is okay, but this type of film has been done so many times before. It's like Resident Evil meets an alternate Book of Genesis. We all return to the earth.
Bloody Disgusting:
"EDEN LOG is visually stunning, it's a bleak trip into a world that both mesmerizing and terrifying"
Twitchfilm.net:
"A dark, philosophical spin on the Garden of Eden"

The Wrestler on DVD
IMDb: "A faded professional wrestler must retire, but finds his quest for a new life outside the ring a dispiriting struggle."
Wow, this is a must-see. Gotta love the low-budget film which focuses on the STORY! I can't picture anyone else but Mickey Rourke playing Randy the Ram.
