Mad Men: Season 3 on DVD

Mad Men: Season Three

THE WORLD'S GONE MAD

Jacket: "Season three of MAD MEN, Primetime Emmy winner for Outstanding Drama Series two years in a row, is bursting with one scandalous surprise after another. Jon Hamm and the rest of the award-winning ensemble contend with a world on the brink. Welcome to MAD MEN -  a shocking portrait of a time that was anything but innocent. Nothing is as sexy. Nothing is as provocative. Nothing is as it seems."

You're mad if you are not following the smartest show currently on television.  I'd suggest watching Seasons 1 and 2 first to understand all the relationships, intrigues and character stories. But you'll have to wait until July 2010 for Season 4 to begin.

Can you believe Mattel will issue a Barbie version of some of the characters? Send a Joan doll my way!

Disney The Princess and the Frog on DVD

A princess in a swamp with a frog standing on her hand

Jacket: "... Discover what really happened after the princess kissed the frog in an inspired twist on the world's most famous kiss.

... Enter Princess Tiana's world of talking frogs, singing alligators and lovesick fireflies as she embarks on an incredible journey through the mystical bayous of Louisiana. Spurred on by a little bit of courage and a great big dream, these new friends come to realize what's truly important in life... love, family and friendship."

This was just okay. I was disappointed as were some of the parents I've spoken to about the film. "It just doesn't compare to any of the other princess films," said one mom.

THIS IS IT on DVD

Jacket: "Michael Jackson's THIS IS IT is a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the performer as he developed, created and rehearsed for his sold-out concerts at London's O2 Arena. Chronicling the months from April through June 2009, this film was produced with the full support of the Estate of Michael Jackson and drawn from more than one hundred hours of behind-the-scenes footage featuring Jackson rehearsing a number of his songs for the show. In raw and candid detail, Michael Jackson's THIS IS IT captures the singer, dancer, filmmaker, architect, creative genius and great artist at work as he creates and perfects his planned final London shows."

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. This phenomenal entertainer will be missed.

Where the Wild Things Are on DVD

The monster (or Wild Thing) Carol towering over a small boy in a sleep suit with wolf ears.

Jacket: "Nine-year-old Max runs away from home and sails across the sea to become king of a wondrous realm of gigantic fuzzy monsters - but being king may not be as carefree as it looks! Filmmaker Spike Jonze directs a magical, visually astonishing film version of Maurice Sendak's celebrated classic exploring the joyous and wild rumpus of the time and place we call childhood."

This was much darker than I would've imagined.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant

Official Site: "Welcome to the Cirque Du Freak, a traveling sideshow filled with magical creatures, misunderstood freaks, and the mysterious vampire, Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly). Drawn to the dark, unpredictable world of the Cirque, 16-year-old Darren (Chris Massoglia) decides to trade in his ordinary life for a chance to become an immortal vampire. As Darren explores his newfound powers and faces unexpected enemies, he’ll find that his existence as a member of the undead is filled with more challenges, suspense and fun than he ever thought possible."

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this and by how much talent was brimming in it: John C. Reilly, Salma Hayek, Willem Dafoe, and Ken Watanabe. I'm very interested in checking out these books now.
